ZIWI

Our farms, farmers and fisheries

Our farmers and fisheries work with animals from pure New Zealand land and sea. Like free-range, grass-fed, ethically raised beef and lamb, local poultry, and wild-caught seafood. By buying ZIWI®, you’re supporting ethical farming practices.

Discover New Zealand, where our animals are ethically raised and our fish are sustainably caught, and meet the passionate people behind it all.

New Zealand's Freedom Principles

We take animal well-being seriously, and so do our farmers, fishers, and suppliers. That’s why we follow New Zealand’s Freedom Principles. These guidelines ensure our animals are farmed ethically.

  • Freedom from hunger and thirst

  • Freedom from discomfort

  • Freedom from pain, injury or disease

  • Freedom to express natural behaviour

  • Freedom from fear and distress

Free-range, year-round

New Zealand’s temperate climate means that animals have plenty of fields and rolling green hills to roam on, 365 days a year.

Grass-fed, grass-finished

Animals are raised on beautiful pastures of grass, clover, and native grasses (and with no feedlots in sight).

Free-range local chicken

Our chickens are free-range, so they can roam, run, leap, bask, and spread their wings.

Wild-caught seafood

As an island nation, New Zealand is surrounded by clean, pristine waters, making it the perfect place to sustainably farm New Zealand green mussels and catch fish.

Say hello to our farmers

Farming is part of Toby’s DNA. In fact, his Turihaua farm has been run by his family since 1896. He’s a big believer in being not just a farmer, but a guardian of the land and the animals he cares for. On his free-range mutton farm, his holistic approach means providing his animals with everything they need to live happily and express their natural behaviours.

“If you don’t look after the animals, for me, there’s just very little point in farming.”

Say hello to our farmers

Brian is a free-range goat farmer based in Tokomaru Bay, New Zealand. His farming philosophy is simple: his animals feed on natural products grown in the ground, exactly what the goats would choose for themselves. New Zealand’s temperate climate means the goats can graze in their own time. And with plenty of natural cover, they’re protected from the elements.

“We look after the animals and the land for the next generation.”

- Brian

Say hello to our farmers

John raises and cares for free-range deer in New Zealand’s hill country. With wide open areas, rolling hills, and plenty of natural shelter, the land perfectly matches the deer’s natural habitat. This means they live happily, free to roam and do what they want.

“My farming philosophy is to look after the stock, because if you look after them, they’ll look after you.”

- John

Say hello to our farmers

Robert is a free-range New Zealand lamb farmer who believes in letting his flock express their natural behaviour. Their environment is full of tussocks, hills, and gullies which provide a varied landscape for the sheep to roam, as well as large rocks for natural shelter.

“When the planet’s running out of resources like it is, we can’t afford to be wasteful.”

Say hello to our farmers

Rob supplies eggs sourced from his free-range chickens. New Zealand’s temperate climate means his birds can roam in the grass all year ‘round. They love being out first thing in the morning before the sun rises. While Rob lets his chickens roam and feed naturally, he sometimes gives them a nutritious treat that’s also a staple ZIWI ingredient – New Zealand green mussels. The chickens love them!

“If you see the benefits, not just for yourself but the animals you farm and those who eat your produce, it’s a good life.”

-Rob
